Something Special

Well it’s official, one of my paintings is going to be featured on the cover of Something Special Magazine! It is a painting of Hailey and I can’t disclose which one, you’ll have to check back soon to see it. “Something Special” is a Magazine that is both a hard copy publication and an online publication. It is a magazine that is dedicated to helping parents who are raising children with special needs by offering resources, giving helpful hints on therapies, vacations, food, just about anything that you can think of. This is a free publication and a well written and informative resource to have. They write featured articles on many topics such as learning differences, behavioral issues, personal care and many feel good and inspirational stories as well. The woman who interviewed me was such a sweetheart and a kind and understanding soul. It’s as if she knew me for a very long time. The magazine covers a wide spectrum of disorders. You can find articles on Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, Chromosome Disorders, Tourette’s Syndrome and Juvenile Diabetes just to name a few. I am not sure which I am more excited about, the fact that my painting is being featured on the cover of such a wonderful magazine, or the fact that Hailey is going to be featured on the cover of a magazine! As you all know, it is this grandmother’s opinion that Hailey is already the most beautiful girl in the world, I think her beautiful blue eyes should be on the cover of every magazine, because she is that beautiful and her contagious smile just happens to light up all of Boston Massachusetts. Our cover is the upcoming FAll issue, coming real soon. Do me a favor, in the interim, while we patiently wait for it to be published, show these great folks some love and support, head on over to their facebook page, and tell them that Janet from Painting for Hailey sent you! Can you guess which painting of Hailey they chose? Which one do you think is worthy of a cover? If you live in the Georgia area, this magazine is easy to find you can pick one up in Savannah, Pooler, Macon, Atlanta and Charleston. Photobucket

Art Created With Eyes

Retrieved from ams vans blog.

An international team merged together in an collaborative effort to create a new way for artists to create art using only their eyes, and they succeeded by creating a very low cost solution that you can build yourself for less than $50 with free software and detailed video instructions.

The invention has been a lifesaver for artist Tony Quan, aka Tempt One, a legendary LA graffity writer, publisher and activist. He is now creating art again, something he has not been able to do ever since ALS left him completely paralyzed except for his eye movement.

“Art is a tool of empowerment and social change, and I consider myself blessed to be able to create and use my work to promote health reform, bring awareness about ALS and help others.”

The team has taken a projection device out into downtown Los angeles to display Quan’s art live as he drew it in his hospital room. The designs were visible from the freeway as drivers watched the creations take place.

The next step for this international dream team is to connect ALS patients together online to create eye art as well as build a network of software developers, hardware hackers, and urban projection artists.

This project was made possible by Members of Free Art and Technology (FAT), OpenFrameworks, the Graffiti Research Lab, the Ebeling Group communities, the Not Impossible Foundation, with additional support from Parsons Commucations Design & Technology.

Expressions of Courage

The other day in a typical doctor's office, I saw a not-so-typical coffee table book. Its lovely artwork captured my attention. A closer look revealed that although the images were beautiful, the story behind the images was even more beautiful.

Expressions of Courage is an organization created with the goal to provide a way for people with epilepsy to express themselves through art. The program includes people of all ages and distributes the artwork in holiday cards, calendars, and coffee table books.

The artwork symbolizes the spirit of the millions of people who have been diagnosed with epilepsy. It is truly an expression of courage.

Anyone with epilepsy, of any age, may enter the Expressions of Courage contest. See Rules and Registration for more information.

Painting!

Here are some fun painting ideas, all from Heidi at Adaptations4kidz. She has so many fun things on her blog, you've gotta check it out if you haven't already!

Bubble Wrap Painting:

We all love popping bubble wrap but around here we like to paint with it too.
All you need for this art project is some bubble wrap, paints, paper, brushes(or fingers).
With Junior I start with a piece of bubble wrap. He likes to play with it first and we pop some of the bubbles. Then we paint on the bubble wrap using a brush or fingers. Then lay a piece of paper over the bubble wrap and press down. Pull the paper off and see what print you have....

Sensory Painting:

We just call it sensory painting for lack of a better term. All you need is some paper, paints, and a shallow tub....

You also need a bunch of various textured balls(a trip to the dollar store gave us lots of neat ones). Junior's favorite balls are the ones in the very front of the picture that have little spiders all over them....

Put the paper into the tub then put a few dots of paint around the edges and start dropping the balls into the tub. Sometimes we do one type ball at a time and other times Junior likes to put in a bunch at once. Then rock the tub around in all directions and you will get some very cool patterns. For a little extra sensory fun and a huge mess help your child use their hands to roll the balls around in the paint.

Here is one of Junior's sensory paintings, he loves to add stickers once the paint is dry....

Swatting Flies:

This is messy but oh so much fun.
All you need is paper, paints, and a flyswatter. A shallow tub will cut down on the mess but is not necessary....

This art project is best done outside if possible because the paint splatters.
Place several dots of different colored paint all over the paper. Grab the fly swatter, start swatting those paint flies and see what cool patterns you end up with!....

Painting All By Myself

A friend had sent me an article about helping your child find a way to independently do artwork no matter what their disability. Some kids use their feet and some hold a brush in their mouth. Well it suddenly hit me that Junior uses his head switch for toys and his computer so why not use his head for painting(one of those duh, why did I not think of this years ago moments). I put a couple holes in a length of elastic and some velcro on the ends then we put it around Junior's head. The hard part was the brush itself, it needed to be long enough so Junior was not getting his face in the paint. We ended up taking the insides out of a marker then sticking a paint brush into one end a a length of flexible plastic tubing into the other.

Junior was turning his head to either side to move the brush, I was not helping. He also would stop and holler for me to get him a new color. I was so excited watching him(yes the tears were rolling), especially when I gave him a new color and he moved the brush to the other side of the paper to use it.

Junior loves doing art projects but for the most part they are all hand over hand. He doesn't mind that and still has a blast. Today though he was more proud than I have ever seen him of something he has made. When he was all finished he just sat and looked at it and would then bust out in a grin.
